On 21 October 2026, an international conference entitled “Turkic-Islamic Monuments of Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur” was held at Khazar University. The event was jointly organised by the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) and Khazar University.
Habiba Aliyeva, Senior Researcher at the Archaeology Scientific Fund Department of the National Museum of History of Azerbaijan, Doctor of Philosophy in History and Associate Professor, presented a paper entitled “Islamic Epigraphic Heritage of Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur”.
The paper examined inscriptions in Arabic, Persian and Azerbaijani preserved on religious, architectural and memorial monuments in Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur. The preliminary findings of the research were presented, highlighting the value of these epigraphic sources for studying the region’s historical and cultural heritage.
The presentation emphasised the importance of preserving and conducting scholarly research on these monuments as significant elements of Turkic-Islamic heritage. It also highlighted the need to promote awareness of the region’s epigraphic heritage within the international scholarly community and ensure its preservation for future generations.
Following the presentation, the topic was discussed, and questions from conference participants and students were addressed.
Participants also discussed opportunities for joint scholarly research, publication of research findings, and cooperation in the protection, conservation and restoration of Turkic-Islamic monuments. TİKA’s role in organising the conference was also acknowledged.
