An article by Gunel Mammadova, Junior Research Fellow at the National Museum of History of Azerbaijan, has been published in the proceedings of the international symposium War and Peace in a Globalizing World, held in Bishkek on 27 September 2026. The article, entitled The Military Elite of Azerbaijan during the Soviet Period: A Historical and Biographical Study in the Context of War and Peace (Based on Materials from the National Museum of History of Azerbaijan), examines an important aspect of Azerbaijan’s military history.
The study explores the formation of Azerbaijan’s military elite during the Soviet period and examines the position and role of Azerbaijani military personnel within the Soviet armed forces.
The scholarly value of the research lies primarily in its use of archival and personal documents preserved in the Museum’s Gifts and Commemorative Objects Fund and Documentary Sources Fund. These materials have not previously been introduced into scholarly research and are examined here for the first time. Their analysis enriches the biographical record of Azerbaijani military personnel of the Soviet period and provides further insight into aspects of their careers and activities.
The findings contribute to the source base for the study of Azerbaijan’s military history and advance research into the role of Azerbaijani military personnel in the Soviet armed forces, as well as into less extensively studied aspects of the history of the Caucasus.
