From Renaissance to Mannerism

“Czech garnet” Gem cutters worked in cutting mills. They came to Bohemia from Germany; one of them was Claudius Creutz, who perfected the cutting of Czech garnets into facets and

experimented with imitation gemstones made of coloured glass. Emperor Rudolph II assembled a great art collection known as the Kunstkammer at Prague Castle and employed many artists. Italian cutters and lapidaries from the Miseroni and Castrucci families worked there too. They set Czech garnets in dishes, jewellery, and altars.
