Czech garnet in the service of the Church and the nobility of the Baroque period

Czech garnet Czech garnet was one of the most popular gemstones in religious and temple jewellery because the small red grains reminded one of drops of blood and thus did justice to the symbolism of Christ’s sacrifice.

The Lobkovicz, Šternberk and other families distributed them from their garnet fields in the Central Bohemian Uplands. Czech gem cutters and polishers such as Jiří Withaler and the Čupík family, held a monopoly in Prague. But the material was also widely exported; garnet frames adorn Czech, German and Austrian goblets and monstrances. The opulent secular dress of the Baroque era was often adorned by garnet jewels as a permanent decoration.
