Artifacts discovered as a result of archaeological excavations carried out in the territory of Azerbaijan are considered one of the major sources in terms of studying the fields of metalworking and jewelry of our ancient material culture. The main part of appropriate archaeological findings was handed over to the ANAS National Museum of History of Azerbaijan. At present jewelry products constitute a great part of the museum’s archaeological collection consisting of about 130 precious metals.
With its artistic features and composition design each jewel expresses aesthetic demands and taste level of its period while its structure and metal’s composition display techniques and professional knowledge and skills of the craftsman.
A golden figurine concerning the 1st millennium BC, which was found as a result of coincidental excavations in Lerik in 2012, is preserved in the Special Fund of the museum. There is a hat with eight-petalled flower on the figurine’s head and a goat on its neck. Signs similar to cuneiform inscription were engraved on its back and the goat. The inside of the figurine made with forging and casting techniques is empty. Its several fragments were secured to one another with welding technique.
It's worth noting that the exhibit which is among the gems of the National Museum of History of Azerbaijan was mentioned in the book “History of the Caucasus at the Crossroads of Empires” (Volume 1. London, “I.B. Tauris, London, New York”, 2021. P.386.) by Swiss historian, professor Christoph Baumer.
